Asawa by Thien-Kieu Lam

Asawa is a cabled scarf designed by Thien-Kieu Lam using Corrie Worsted and featured in the book Worsted, A Knitwear Collection Curated by Aimée Gille of La Bien Aimée. With its architectural cable motif, this scarf is beautiful and interesting to wear on both sides of the fabric.

 

 

 Here is what Thien-Kieu wrote as the inspiration for this pattern:

“The Asawa scarf is named for artist Ruth Asawa, whose work includes three-dimensional pieces created by drawing lines through space using wire. These sculptures are a master study in relationships: line and form, light and shadow, object and environment. Although the focal point, these sculptures do not dominate your attention; instead, they compel you to also consider the space they occupy.

 

 

The design for this scarf incorporates cables, garter, and reverse stockinette. When present, cables are often the dominating feature of a design. My goal with this scarf was to achieve a balance among the three elements. The cables are still a defining feature, but the garter and reverse stockinette stitches equally contribute to the visual impact of the design. Like with Asawa’s sculptures, the eye continually moves from one element to the other, focusing not on just one but on the interplay among them. The lines created by the cables also resemble the contours of some of these sculptures, which was serendipitous but very fitting!”
